Who We Are
Senior Medicare Patrols (SMPs) empower and assist Medicare beneficiaries, their families, and caregivers to prevent, detect, and report health care fraud, errors, and abuse through outreach, counseling, and education. SMPs are grant-funded projects of the federal U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), U.S. Administration for Community Living (ACL).
What We Do
Community Educators with the Virginia Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) assist seniors, their caregivers, and the general public to prevent, detect and report Medicare fraud, errors, and abuse. SMP volunteers are trained to teach about topics such as protecting your medical identity, reading Medicare benefit notices, recognizing scams, and how to report concerns. Virginia SMP is apart of the Virginia Association of Area Agencies on Aging and is funded by a Federal grant. SMP volunteer opportunities offer flexible scheduling as volunteers can select the dates and locations of outreach events which best suit their availability. After training, volunteers are asked to commit to four educational events per year. The SMP program receives requests daily from civic and community groups for our prevention information and resource materials. Most presentations are scheduled during weekdays with some evening opportunities as well as some weekend community events. Join us and be a part of a grassroots effort to reduce the billions of dollars lost each year to Medicare fraud, error, and abuse. Help to put this important information in your neighbors' hands!
